American Sentinel University is a private for-profit university that maintains offices in Denver, Colorado and Birmingham, Alabama.

It is a product of a merger between the College of Computer and Information Sciences which was founded in 1988 by Lloyd E. Clayton, Jr. as the American Institute of Computer Science and the American Graduate School of Management founded in 2000.

Through the merger, the technology programs of the former and the business programs of the latter have been combined to offer a wide range of academic programs that have since been expanded to include other areas of study specifically in healthcare.

American Sentinel University is primarily a distance-learning institution offering online degree programs and certificate programs.

It is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). Nursing Programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Authorization to operate was granted by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education, and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.

It also maintains military affiliations including the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Veterans Assistance, Department of Defense Tuition Assistance, Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), Concurrent Admissions Programs (ConAP), and the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

Degree programs

Include A.S. Geographic Information Systems, B.S. Computer Science/Software Development, B.S. Geographic Information Systems, B.S. Information Security, B.S. Information Systems, B.S. Information Technology – Networking, B.S. Management Information Systems, M.S. Computer Science in 3 specializations namely Computer Networking, Computer Programming, and Information Security, and M.S. Information Systems. Industry Certification Programs including Cisco, CompTIA, Microsoft, and PMP are likewise offered. The B.S. in Business Administration is offered in 7 specializations including Finance, Healthcare Management, Human Resource Management, Informatics, Leadership, Management, and Marketing.

Other Business degrees

Include MBA, MBA Healthcare, and M.S. Business Intelligence. Healthcare degree programs include Registered Nurse to B.S. Nursing (RN to BSN); Registered Nurse to M.S. Nursing (RN to MSN); M.S. Nursing in five specializations including Case Management, Infection Prevention, and Control, Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Management and Organizational Leadership; MBA Healthcare; and the Doctor of Nursing Practice Executive Leadership.

Tuition

For bachelor degree programs cost $350.00 per credit hour while graduate programs cost $380.00 per credit hour.

Financial assistance is provided through federal student financial aid, payment plans, employer reimbursement, and military benefits. The university’s in-house payment plan allows students to finance their education with no interest or at a minimal rate.

Zero percent financing can be availed of by paying a down payment of at least $750.00 with the balance spread out in nine (9) months. Federal aid is provided in the form of Pell Grants, Direct Stafford Loans, Direct PLUS Loans for Parents, Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate, Professional Degree Students, In-School Loan Deferment, and Hope and Lifetime Learning Tax Credit.

The university’s primary mission is to provide innovative degree and certificate programs that will facilitate the enhancement of students’ professional and civic lives.

It has formed partnerships with various organizations and institutions for the educational benefit of their respective employees. Its educational affiliations seek to widen the learning opportunities of its own students.

Presently there are more than 2,000 students enrolled in American Sentinel University. Faculty, consist of full-time and adjunct members numbering at more than 150, with 80% holding PhDs.
