Colleges and universities have been putting forth a greater effort to track the success of their student veterans through surveys and longitudinal big data analysis. By constantly measuring just how well these students are doing, better initiatives can be taken in order to make sure that student veterans can continue to thrive in the academic opportunities that are made available to them. Hefty Investments

According to data reported by the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, there are well over 500,000 students with military experience who are supported by more than $8 billion provided through the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. Since 2011, the US Department of Defense has reported that well over 320,000 active duty service members have enrolled in postsecondary education programs. More than $1 billion in funding has been volunteered through the DOD Voluntary Education Program to give veterans a chance at pursuing better career prospects after entering their postsecondary educational careers.

Gaps In Understanding

Though no shortage of effort has been put into understanding just how well veterans can benefit after being put through postsecondary education, there are still gaps in the full picture of understanding about how well they’re doing after receiving their degrees.

To date, there have not been any accurate counts to indicate the exact number of student veterans that are enrolled in postsecondary student institutions. Not only is there not quite enough information to determine the exact number of ex-military duty students enrolled in postsecondary education institutions, but the success rate of those who graduate from postsecondary institutions has not yet been specified either.

In order to address all of the areas that could stand to have more information regarding veterans’ postsecondary education performance, institutional surveys have been employed in order to gain greater insight. Institutional surveys examine different angles of veterans’ postsecondary education career paths in order to illustrate the clearest picture of student veterans’ performance, and through this information, better interpretations of the best ideas of how to facilitate better results can be created.

Initiatives To Improve Insight

While significant effort to survey veterans’ performance rates has been made, it has been found that the institutions conducting these examinations haven’t always been doing so with the use of strong statistically valid data. Institutions are putting forth concentrated efforts to make it so that postsecondary education programs are more inviting for veterans, but at the same time, there has yet to been a solid answer to the question of what exactly causes veteran student attrition.

Moving forward, the main goals of institutions that want to understand the picture of veteran student performance more clearly will be the development of more dependable ways to collect data on completion and retention. Institutions will be focused on collecting more statistically valid data to reveal exactly how deeply their investments impact student veteran prospects.
