What Jobs are Available for Former FBI?

Police Officer

Many former FBI agents have a background in police work, or at least a penchant for this kind of work. As a former FBI agent, you will be well qualified to become a police officer. Check with your individual state to see if you need to fulfill any special requirements to become a civilian police officer. You might want to get some specialized training, especially if you want to work on an unusual vehicle, such as a bike or horse.

Security Officer

Security officers are needed in many places, such as in office buildings, at public events and venues, and sometimes in private residences. For this reason, becoming a security officer is a great profession that gives you control over your own hours and work setting. In addition, you can choose your own challenge level; some security officer positions are quite tame while others will see much more action.

Private Investigator

Among the jobs available for former FBI, this one may be the most appealing to some former FBI members. As a private investigator, you’ll take on private clients, doing investigation to help them solve personal problems. The work is well suited to former FBI agents, and it can be rewarding to have control of your own business and help your personal clients. The requirements to enter the profession may be steep, and you’ll need to consider additional legal training.

Military Officer

It may seem like an unusual jump, but a military role might be a good option for a former FBI agents. The higher level reasoning skills, coupled with good physical combat training, are very useful to a military officer. FBI agents also know how to manage people in dangerous situations, which is critical to the role of a military officer. Great options exist for agents with at least a bachelor’s degree; you’ll need to pass an intelligence test in order to become an officer from the start.

Finding a Job as a Former FBI

There are a few things that will make your life easier as you look for a job outside of the FBI. First, you’ll want to highlight the things that you learned or accomplished in your time in the FBI. Many employers may not understand the exact nature of your work, so it’s good to be as transparent as possible in describing your skill set.

You’ll also need to show that you can adjust to corporate or private sector work. The demands of a government job may be quite different than those of a private employer, so leverage a good attitude and experience to overcome this barrier.
